What is “working well”?

What is working well? To me, “working well” means we can choose to build and move through our professional lives in a different, more productive, healthier way.

Let’s dive into that a bit deeper. During the pandemic, many employers looking to retain workers launched in-house yoga and stress-reduction programs. The World Health Organization’s 2024 fact sheet on mental health at work tells us the following:

  • Decent work is good for mental health.

  • Poor working environments – including discrimination and inequality, excessive workloads, low job control and job insecurity – pose a risk to mental health.

  • Globally, an estimated 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety at a cost of US$ 1 trillion per year in lost productivity.

I knew Work Well Pilates was needed after I learned the following:

  1. Previous scientific literature has already corroborated the positive effects of Pilates exercises on physical health as well as depression and anxiety,

  2. Pilates training using videoconference (virtual lessons) may have beneficial effects on executive functioning, attention, memory, information processing speed, orientation and cognitive flexibility, and

  3. Pilates training only once a week, over a 10-week period, can result in significant improvements in skeletal muscle mass, flexibility, balance, core- and abdominal muscle strength, and body awareness.

My Mission:

  • Whether you're building strength and flexibility in your teens and 20’s or maintaining balance and mobility in your 70’s, I use Pilates principles and exercises to offer a sustainable, adaptable approach to a healthier you.

About Me

  • After completing a B.S. in Biology at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, WA, I took a leap and moved across the country to pursue two master’s degrees (M.S. Environmental Science and Policy, M. Ed. Secondary Education (Biology)) at George Mason University (GMU) in Virginia.

Why? I know life is filled with twists and turns that we cannot plan ahead for. I wanted to gain the knowledge, experience, and credentials to provide more options for myself and my family in the future.

  • Prepare to laugh. I lasted only one whole academic school year as a public high school Biology teacher for general and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. It was one of the most stressful learning experiences I have ever had, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The teachers I had the privilege of working alongside have been an inspiration to me to this day. They taught me how to pivot and adapt quickly, ask for help, laugh through my many painful missteps, and how to show up for my students.

I have been a public servant, developing and delivering curricula, trainings, and assessments in every professional position I have held over the past 20 years. I love that there is ALWAYS more to learn, and what drives me is the challenge of finding ways to share that knowledge with others.

  • Like many of you, I’m a working parent, and play multiple roles in my professional and personal life, such as being a project and contract manager, a regulatory writer, a data analyst, a content developer, a small business owner, a (mediocre) chef, a chauffeur, a nurse, a tutor, a financial manager, and the list goes on!

What I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn is that my Pilates Instructor-In-Training hat fits beautifully. It combines my passion for learning and sharing, which I hope in time will positively impact each individual and community I work with.
